Atheist Mega-“Church”?

A dear friend of mine posted an article on Facebook earlier this month that I just got around to reading this weekend.  It was about an Atheist mega-church movement that is happening across the globe.  This struck me as interesting because it seemed that why would a group of people who don’t believe in God want to start a “church” for other people who don’t believe in God?

Here is the link to the article for you to read for yourself – http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/11/10/atheist-mega-churches/3489967/

Now there are a lot of things that pop out to me in this article.  One is that they aren’t there to bash other believers but to have a support group for other atheists.  Okay, I can understand that and even respect that but why call it a CHURCH?! The very first paragraph ends like this, “an inspirational sermon, a reading and some quiet reflection. The only thing missing was God.”  I wonder is this what Paul was warning Timothy about in 2 Timothy 3:1-7.  Verse 5 really states this plainly, “having a form of godliness but denying the power thereof.”

The old statement, “If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, acts like a duck; its a duck.”  Well this simply isn’t the case.  This is a group of people who can want to have fellowship with other “non-believers” and instead of calling it a group, club, movement, and the list can go on and on; they decided to call it a “church”.  To me, in my honest opinion, this should be an eye-opener to the CHURCH today!!  Honestly what separates our church services from their “church” services??  They have music, most churches have music.  They have a inspirational sermon, most churches have an inspirational sermon.  They draw close to together through fellowship and helping their fellow “believer”, same as we do.  SO WHAT SEPARATES US??  Well, let me rephrase that, WHAT SHOULD SEPARATE US??  It should be the power of God.

Look back at the book of Acts, what drew the crowd to the people in the upper room??  It was the power of God.  What drew the woman with the issue of blood to Jesus?  It was His healing power.  The stories from the Bible can go on and on.  So lets make it a little more real.  What drew people to the Revival at Brownsville??   What drew people to the outpouring in Topeka, Kansas??  What drew people to the tent revivals of Billy Graham, Oral Roberts and others??  IT WAS THE POWER OF GOD!!!  I truly believe that we can become so worried about offending someone and so worried about hurting someone’s feelings, or running people off that we can really and truly put God in a box.  We can really 100% forget the One who sets us apart.  Read 1 Peter 2:9.

“But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;” 1 Peter 2:9(NKJV)

God has chosen us to be His people.  To be the light in the darkness, to point those who are lost to the wonderful saving grace in Calvary.  We need to be sure and put Jesus in the center of everything we do in our CHURCH and CHURCH SERVICES.  My prayer is that we experience and allow the presence of God to flow in our services like never before.  That we begin to see the lame leap, the dumb speak, the deaf to hear, the blind to see.  Marriages put back together, broken hearts restored, addicts delivered, chains broken, lives set free!!!  I pray we begin to allow God to move in the churches of America again and that we realize that it is not about us sitting on the church pew, but the ones who are lost in the world!

Be blessed!!!!
